| You know what they say, bigger is better… Although some individuals will say differently.
Whilst we agree with art that the bigger the canvasr, the bigger the impact, in some cases, a picture can sometimes be toooo big! Some people say your print should be half the height of the wall it’s on; others say it should be a third. Some say go big or go home! So whilst the debate rages on whether bigger is better. Here are some guidelines and tips for choosing how big your art should be in your home so that it can still make an impact without overwhelming the space. Measure up! Firstly, get to know the wall dimensions on which you want to put your art. There’s no point in buying a canvas or frame for an A3 Print if it doesn’t fit on the wall. Take the time to get to know the dimensions so you can rule out what simply won’t work. Also, test orientation and whether portrait or landscape looks best. For taller narrower walls, portrait is usually the better option. The rule of third size. Using a third of the wall as your size guide is the best way to figure out how big a picture should be. This means that if you have an 8-foot-long wall, then your print should be 2 feet wide. If it’s not possible for you to use this method because of furniture or other objects in the room, try measuring out where each piece will go before purchasing any art so that it doesn’t get too big or small for its surroundings. Don’t downsize too much!When you’re deciding how large to make your art, it’s important not to make it too small, either. A picture that’s too small will look like it has nothing to say. Generally, when buying art, it can be surprising how big you need to go, so if you are unsure, a helpful trick is to map an outline of the size of the art piece in masking tape so you can get a general feel for it in the room. Think about the space around the art.Once you have decided on the size of your art print for the wall, it’s time to consider the size of the art for the room and the furniture in that room. When hanging your piece over furniture now, you need to consider the wall space and the size in relation to the furniture below. Sometimes a piece of art may look a good size on a wall with no furniture but with a big sofa below that art, the art can look disproportionate and a little lost on the wall. The rule here is the art should be three-fourths the width of the furniture and hung 6″-12″ above the top. Ultimately, the best way to know if a print is too big or too small for your wall may sound obvious, but just use your tape measure! Take time and map it out. Feel free to consider the tips listed, but ultimately it’s your home, so do whatever makes you feel good.
