Everything You Should Know If You Have Oily Hair

Having oily hair doesn’t mean there is anything wrong with you. Oily hair simply means you produce more sebum. This substance is produced by your scalp and naturally coats your hair. It gives your hair a natural shine and protects it from damage while helping it to stay moisturized.

But, producing large amounts of sebum does mean your hair means your hair will look oily. This can be frustrating and many people with oily hair will wash their hair daily in a bid to eliminate the issue.

Is It Natural?

The first thing you should consider is whether your hair has always been this oily or if the problem has only developed recently. If it’s a recent issue then you’ll find there are several things you can do to reduce oil production and stop your hair from looking oily.

Perhaps the best starting point is to look at the hair care products you currently use. Make sure you are using ones made with natural ingredients and that are designed for use with oily hair.

It’s a good idea to use an anti-dandruff shampoo as part of this treatment. It will reduce the amount of oil on your scalp.

Oily Hair Can Be A Sign Of Inflammation

If your head is irritated for any reason it will slow your hair growth. The hair that does grow will be weaker than usual and it will appear oilier. This is because your scalp will continue to produce sebum, and may produce more to compensate for the inflammation. Unfortunately, you’ll have fewer strands for the oil to spread amongst, making your hair appear oily.

If this is the case you’ll need to figure out why your scalp is inflamed. This could be due to a lack of vitamins in your diet or because you’ve been using the wrong hair products and have changed the natural environment of your scalp.

Review your diet and change your hair products. The change will be gradual but you’ll notice your scalp and hair starting to look less oily.

Humid Environment

If you and your hair are subject to an environment with high humidity then there is a good chance your scalp will produce more sebum to compensate for the humidity. This will make your hair look oily. Of course, it can be difficult to change your environment. You’ll need to invest in dehumidifiers to help reduce humidity at home and lower the oil content of your hair.

Wash Your Hair Less

If you have oily hair then it’s tempting to wash your hair more often to get rid of the excess oil. However, this may simply serve to dry your scalp, making it produce even more oil. It’s worth washing your hair less to see if this helps.

If the excess oil is connected to a dry scalp you’ll restore balance and can eliminate dandruff in one go.

Keep Your Brush Clean

Your rush is an essential part of your hair care routine. But, if you don’t clean the brush you are effectively brushing oil into your hair, making it appear oilier and even dirty, straight after washing it.

Try cleaning your brush daily to improve its effectiveness and reduce your oily hair.
